The Sham

Author: Ellen Allen
Genre: YA Thriller
Published: September 7th 2014 by BookBaby
Source: Author
Purchase from: Amazon

When love leads to death, be careful who you trust…

Eighteen-year-old Emily Heath would love to leave her dead-end town, known locally as "The Sham", with her boyfriend, Jack, but he's very, very sick; his body is failing and his brain is shutting down. He's also in hiding, under suspicion of murder. Six months' ago, strange signs were painted across town in a dialect no one has spoken for decades and one of Emily's classmates washed up in the local floods.

Emily has never trusted her instincts and now they're pulling her towards Jack, who the police think is a sham himself, someone else entirely. As the town wakes to discover new signs plastered across its walls, Emily must decide who and what she trusts, and fast: local vigilantes are hunting Jack; the floods, the police, and her parents are blocking her path; and the town doesn’t need another dead body.

WARNING: THIS BOOK IS UNSUITABLE FOR YOUNGER TEENAGE READERS. IT DEPICTS ADULT SITUATIONS, MURDER SCENES, CONVERSATIONS ABOUT SEX AND PROFANITY.

My Thoughts

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Author's Note: This book is unsuitable for younger teenage readers. It depicts adult situations, murder scenes, conversations about sex, and profanity.

I have mixed emotions about The Sham. It lived up to my expectations of being gory and violent, but there were a lot of things I didn't get. I liked it okay, but I can't say I'm a fan.

For starters, this book isn't for the faint-hearted. There were gruesome scenes and I often found myself grossed out by the stuffs mentioned in this book. But for some reason, I couldn't look away. The story was riveting. What I liked about The Sham is that it kept me constantly guessing and slightly freaked out up until the end.

[ARC REVIEW] Killer Instinct by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Killer Instinct

Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Series: The Naturals #1
Genre: YA Mystery, Thriller
Expected publication: November 4th 2014 by Disney-Hyperion
ARC Source: Publisher through Netgalley
Purchase from: Amazon | The Book Depository | B&N
Seventeen-year-old Cassie Hobbes has a gift for profiling people. Her talent has landed her a spot in an elite FBI program for teens with innate crime-solving abilities, and into some harrowing situations. After barely escaping a confrontation with an unbalanced killer obsessed with her mother’s murder, Cassie hopes she and the rest of the team can stick to solving cold cases from a distance.

But when victims of a brutal new serial killer start turning up, the Naturals are pulled into an active case that strikes too close to home: the killer is a perfect copycat of Dean’s incarcerated father—a man he’d do anything to forget. Forced deeper into a murderer’s psyche than ever before, will the Naturals be able to outsmart the enigmatic killer’s brutal mind games before this copycat twists them into his web for good?

With her trademark wit, brilliant plotting, and twists that no one will see coming, Jennifer Lynn Barnes will keep readers on the edge of their seats (and looking over their shoulders) as they race through the pages of this thrilling novel.

My Thoughts

*I received a free eARC of this book from Netgalley*

We already met Cassie and the gang from the first book, The Naturals. We know their skills and what they can do. We saw them help solve a case and almost died in the process. In this sequel, Killer Instinct, the stakes are even higher and deadlier.

Pain isn’t new to me.

I’ve been to hell only to find it never really leaves when you get back. It haunts me through nightmares, unrequited love, lies, broken hearts, and now death.

A monster almost took my life.
My best friend carries half my soul a world away.
My boyfriend broke my heart but refuses to let me go.
And my father is dead.

I don’t believe in fate and I don’t believe in happily-ever-afters, but for some reason, I still hope.

Live, even with a tainted spirit.
Long for my other half to come back to me.
Risk another broken heart, just to feel loved again.
And refuse to let another horror break me.

In the face of my most recent tragedy, I have to decide whether forgiveness is something I can give. But even if that’s an option, can I be forgiven?

Excerpt

Chapter 5

September 2009

When we got outside, Blake grabbed me and led me towards the wall where he caged me with a hand on either side of my head. He was breathing heavily, and for a moment neither of us said anything. Our breaths combined as if they weren’t coming from either of us— as if we were one breathing being. He moved his hand to my face, traced down my cheek, and cupped my jaw.

“That was so stupid and reckless,” he said, anger and awe mixing in his tone.

He moved his fingers to softly trace my lips, and rested his other hand at the small of my back. His fingers grazed over the skin between my shirt and shorts, raising goose bumps all along my skin. It felt like I had been shocked and then reawakened with raw passion. With a gentle tug, he pulled my hips right into his.

[REVIEW] Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White

Illusions of Fate

Author: Kiersten White
Genre: YA Fantasy, Romance, Historical Fiction
Published: September 9th 2014 by HarperTeen
Purchase from: Amazon | The Book Depository

Dive into a world of enchantment and romance in this lush fantasy, which Stephanie Perkins, international bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss, called "an absolute delight—a magical, sparkling, dangerous world with witty repartee and a romance that will light your heart on fire." Fans of Libba Bray and Cassandra Clare will fall in love with this captivating stand-alone novel from Kiersten White, New York Times bestselling author of the Paranormalcy trilogy.

Jessamin has been an outcast since she moved from her island home of Melei to the dreary country of Albion. Everything changes when she meets the gorgeous, enigmatic Finn, who introduces her to the secret world of Albion's nobility, a world that has everything Jessamin doesn't—power, money, status . . . and magic. But Finn has secrets of his own, and the vicious Lord Downpike will do anything to possess them. Unless Jessamin, armed only with her wits, can stop him.

My Thoughts

Illusions of Fate, while unique and refreshing, did not strike that much impact on me. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't too fond of it either. It was okay, I guess.

There's not much on character development because Jessamin was already strong-headed and stubborn to begin with. The change in her came only when she learned not to judge people based on their birth and heritage. But I liked her strength and her assertiveness to stand on her own and not depend on any man. I only wished there was more of Finn's background. I would have liked to know him more.
