It's Monday! What Are You Reading? #2

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme, hosted by Book Journey, where we share what book we just finished, what we're currently reading, and what's next in our TBR pile!

Yeah, I know I said this is going to be an every-other-week thing, but hey, a girl can change her mind, right? *wink*

Anyway, here's what went on last week:

Just finished:

Currently reading:

I'm almost halfway through and loving it! This is my kind of thriller!

What's next:

You're probably wondering what happened to The Fault In Our Stars, which I should be reading by now but am not. Kill me now because I'm still afraid to read TFIOS. A lot of people loved it and I don't think I'm ready to have my life ruined by this book. Haha! But seriously, I'm just intimidated by the book. I'd probably pick it up after Body Double.

[REVIEW] Love Resolution by Michelle Mankin

Love Resolution

Author: Michelle Mankin
Series: Black Cat Records/Brutal Strength trilogy, Book 3
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
Published: April 16th 2013 by Michelle Mankin
Purchase from: Amazon | The Book Depository

To forgive or not to forgive…
There’s a storm brewing at Black Cat Records and lead singer Marcus Anthony and guitarist Avery Jones are at the center of it.
Brutal Strength is leaving Vancouver and heading out on a big stadium tour with the reprobate rockers from Tempest as their opening act.
Avery is forced to deal with a troubling figure from her past while being pursued by Tempest’s tatted bad boy, Bryan ‘Bullet’ Jackson.
Meanwhile, Marcus must battle his own internal demons as well as this rival for Avery’s affection.
Can Avery and Marcus keep their fairy tale happily ever after together when the prevailing winds of the real world are against them?
Love Resolution is the third book in the Black Cat Records series.

**A new adult contemporary novel with mature subject matter**

A great conclusion to a great trilogy. Michelle Mankin really rocked it with Love Resolution. I couldn't put it down!

Our rocker couple, Avery and Marcus, from Love Revolution continues their story in this book. And boy, what a story it was! It was beautiful and frustrating and intense and swoony. There were the things that we loved about Avery and Marcus and more. New characters, new conflicts, new music!

[REVIEW] 6 Seconds of Life by Tonya Fitzharris

6 Seconds of Life

Author: Tonya Fitzharris
Genre: NA Contemporary
Published: September 1st 2012 by Createspace
Purchase from: Amazon | The Book Depository

Maura has just jumped.

Now she has precisely six seconds until she hits the water below her--just six more seconds until she is finally freed from her mundane and aimless existence. Freed of all of the regrets and disappointments that have haunted her throughout her nineteen years.

She just needs to be free.

But as she falls, the most pivotal points of her life start to replay like a movie in her head: her family falling apart, her first love, her first heartbreak, and her first betrayal. As she remembers these moments that brought her to this point, will she feel a sense of peace? Or will her death be her greatest regret?

"6 Seconds of Life" is a new adult novel that not only explores the ups and downs of college life, but the ups and downs of life as we know it.

Disturbing and emotional. I did not shed a tear but 6 Seconds of Life broke my heart.

My heart ached for Maura. She's insecure and unstable and emotionally abused. What hurt the most was that the abuse came from the people who should be the first to take care of her. I'm not going to enumerate the things that pushed her into wanting to end her own life because those will make a long list. Just know that those things are so horrible that no teenager should be shouldering them, especially alone. When she met Owen, I thought maybe he could help her. Maura thought so, too. And in fairness to Owen, he did try. And I believe there really was something real between him and Maura until college life and Greek society pulled them apart. Speaking of Greek, I just want to say that Maura's sorority sisters were bitches. Sisterhood, my ass. I've never read such a joke of a sorority as this book's Theta Beta. Abandoning a sister is sisterhood? Calling her a whore and a liar in front of everyone is? Gods, I was so angry at those girls. They were really pathetic. Burn in hell, bitches!

[BOOK BLITZ: Excerpt + Giveaway] My Life From Hell by Tellulah Darling

My Life From Hell

by Tellulah Darling
(The Blooming Goddess Trilogy #3)
Publication date: March 20th 2014
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, Young Adult

To say that Sophie Bloom is at the top of her game with only one week until spring equinox and the final showdown with Zeus and Hades would be, well, lying. The Goddess of Spring feels more like the Goddess of Bzz Thanks For Playing than the savior of humanity. And could her relationships be any more messed up?

Good times.

Sophie is convinced that things can’t get any worse than crawling back to her mother Demeter and begging for help. But she’s about to find out how very wrong she is.

It’s a race against time for Sophie to implement the big battle strategy in the YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology finale My Life From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book three of this teen fantasy romance series. Save herself; save the world. Humanity may be screwed.

I fired again and again, staying rooted to the spot, and forcing extra power from deep within the earth. I wiggled my bare feet into the dirt, digging my toes in deeper.

At least it didn’t stay dark. Between fireballs, lightning strikes, my shockwaves and Kai’s black light, it was quite the dazzling illumination.

My eyes closed. I didn’t need to see the Photokia and Pyrosim to know where they were. I could sense them, millions and millions, swarming me. More than I could count. More than I could process.

It was a plague of minions. The world was so thick with them that I was amazed there was still room for air. Their fireballs burned my skin and sparked my hair. Their lightning arced through my body.

The air was heat and smoke and burning destruction. Every particle glided over my skin in electric vibrations that shocked the tiny hairs on my arms. Black ash rained down, covering me in a blanket of soot. I took it all in and used it. Turned it around and sent it back with every shockwave I fired.

I felt untouchable. Even with all the hits I was taking, my healing abilities kept up pretty well. I had never been more a goddess, more every-inch powerful, than in this moment. I felt Persephone settle into my skin, connect to me in a way that had never happened before. For this moment, at least, we were in perfect synch. We were the vanquishers and our enemies would go down tasting our wrath.

Until I heard the laughter.

Tellulah Darling

1) YA romantic comedy author because her first kiss sucked and she's compensating.
2) Alter ego of former screenwriter.
3) Sassy minx.

Writes about: where love meets comedy. Awkwardness ensues.

Tellulah Darling is a firm believer that some of the best stories happen when love meets comedy. Which is why she has so much fun writing young adult romantic comedy novels. Her tales span contemporary, teen fantasy romance, and YA Greek mythology, and range from stand alone books to series. For Tellulah, teen romance is the most passionate, intense, and awkward there is - a comedy goldmine. Plus smart, mouthy, teen girls rock.

Sassy girls. Swoony boys. What could go wrong?

So this is my first time to participate in this meme and I'm planning to do this every other week. I'm such a slow reader, that's why. I'd probably post the same books if I'm going to post weekly. ^__^

Anyway, on to the good stuff...

[REVIEW] The Boyfriend Thief by Shana Norris

The Boyfriend Thief

Author: Shana Norris
Genre: YA Contemporary, Romance
Published: March 24th 2014 by The Studio, a Paper Lantern Lit imprint
Purchase from: Amazon

Avery James has her life planned out: this summer she'll work with a humanitarian program in Costa Rica, next year she'll graduate at the top of her class, and after that, college and medical school. Perfect, planned, total order.

The only problem: getting the rest of the money she needs for the trip before the deadline. Hannah Cohen, her biggest competition for the valedictorian title, makes an unexpected offer: If Avery can win over Zac Greeley and make him break up with Hannah before the end of the school year, a check for five hundred dollars is all hers. Faced with the prospect of spending yet another summer working as a giant hot dog, it's an offer Avery can't refuse.

Zac is nothing like Avery expected. Within his chaotic world of midnight slushie runs and spontaneous dance parties, her total order is quickly falling apart while Hannah seems poised to get everything she wants. But just how much is Avery willing to give up for the perfect, planned life?

The Boyfriend Thief actually came off as a surprise because I wasn't expecting to really like it. I thought this would be a light, romantic, teenybopper book, but actually, it has deeper issues that make The Boyfriend Thief a really good read.

[REVIEW] Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Author: Jerry Spinelli
Genre: YA Contemporary, Romance
Published: September 2002 by Scholastic
Purchase from Amazon | The Book Depository

From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, hallways hum “Stargirl.” She captures Leo Borlock’s heart with one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. Until they are not. Leo urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her - normal.

"And I think every once in a while someone comes along who is a little more primitive than the rest of us, a little closer to our beginnings, a little more in touch with the stuff we're made of."

Finally, a book that I was able to really connect with. It's refreshing and honest and real. It's simple yet not so simple. Raw and profound. A story of first love and heartbreak and being yourself and wanting to fit in. I loved every moment I was reading this book.

My Name is Rapunzel
By K.C. Hilton

Young Adult Fantasy / Fairytale / Folklore
Date Published: 11/23/2013

My tale has been told again and again, and I've heard each one. Except for my hair, I barely recognize the pitiful renditions. Muddled versions, crafted to entertain laughing children...but the children wouldn't have laughed if they'd known the real story. It wasn't their fault. They didn't know the truth. Nobody did. My name is Rapunzel. I will tell you my story. I will tell you the truth.

Just go, Henry. Save yourself. I tried to shout, but my mouth wouldn’t give way to sound. I was paralyzed. Was it with fear, or something else? The cackling witch at the tree line convinced me it was her doing.

I heard Henry continue to shout for me to flee, but I didn’t respond. I didn’t move. I didn’t run. I was frozen like a lifeless statue in a cold museum. With only the movement of my eyes, I pleaded with him to help me. A tear escaped one of my eyes then rolled down my cheek. That single tear managed to do what my heart and body could not. Escape.

Fear, like unseen hands, gripped my lungs and tried to crush them slowly. My stomach churned and threatened to empty. Would we die here?

The gentle chill of night had turned into a mid-winter’s frost. Tiny bumps rose on my arms and the small hairs prickled to attention. I opened my mouth to speak, but the words remained trapped in my throat.

[REVIEW] The Dig by Audrey Hart

The Dig

Author: Audrey Hart
Series: Zoe and Zeus trilogy, Book 1
Genre: YA Fantasy, Romance, Mythology
Published: November 11th 2011 by Backlit Fiction
Purchase from: Amazon

Zoe Calder has always been an outsider. Stashed away in boarding schools since her parents died, Zoe buries herself in the study of ancient worlds. Her greatest thrill is spending her summers with her archaeologist aunt and uncle on digs around the world. And one day, while investigating a newly unearthed temple in Crete, Zoe discovers a luminous artifact that transports her to ancient Greece.

As Zoe quickly learns, the Olympian Gods are real, living people—humans with mysterious powers… Powers that Zoe quickly realizes she has come to possess, as well. However, when the people of ancient Greece mistake Zoe for an Olympian, the Gods must restore the balance of the ancient world… No matter what.

Zoe is forced to play a confusing and dangerous game as Hera rallies the gods against her—all except for Zeus, the beautiful, winged young god who risks everything to save her.

Out of time and out of her element, teenager Zoe Calder finds herself in ancient Greece, battling against the power of the Olympians and the vengeance of a scorned goddess—all for the strange and mysterious boy she has come to love.

This is why I tend to shy away from Greek myth retellings. (With the sole exception of Rick Riordan's books, of course.) Some books just twist the myths into bizarre and unrecognizable tales that you can't connect them to the original stories anymore. And then you'll just feel like you're reading an entirely different story from the one it's supposed to be based from. That's exactly what happened with The Dig.

I really wanted to like this book. I love Greek mythology, so I always try to give retellings a chance. Hence, The Dig. But I was disappointed! Half the time I was reading this I wanted to strangle myself because I couldn't believe I was still reading the book! Ugh! Frustration overload!
