In this e-book short story by Rick Riordan, Carter Kane is investigating rumored sightings of a monster on Long Island when he runs into something else: a mysterious boy named Percy Jackson. And their meeting isn't exactly friendly. . . .
I’d probably be a little bias here since it’s Rick Riordan and he’s, like, one of my rock star authors and I’d wholeheartedly give an automatic 5-star to any book penned by him, but seriously this book rocks. I’ve been waiting for something like this since The Red Pyramid and THE SON OF SOBEK is like a dream come true. I love crossovers! Especially a Percy Jackson-Kane Chronicles crossover. Riordan’s been dropping hints through the entire Kane Chronicles series and it’s freaking the hell out of me. And now, finally!
It’s a very short read and of course I devoured it in one sitting. I’m starving for more especially now that The House of Hades is coming out in what, a few weeks? But THE SON OF SOBEK is good in its entirety. The story is set separately from both the storylines of Percy Jackson and the Olympians/Heroes of Olympus and The Kane Chronicles. And although it’s told from Carter’s perspective, he and Percy are given equal emphasis and importance. They have different personalities, skills and strengths but are both good warriors. I enjoyed their bickering and admired their spur-of-the-moment partnership. They’re both funny and smart. For the nth time, I am reminded why I love Rick Riordan’s books so much.
I love love the ending! Knowing that there might be more of this crossover – that there’s a chance that the demigods and the magicians of the House of Life will meet – is enough to keep me in a frenzy. And the ending is perfectly worded. It’s just amazing! Riordan’s truly a master story-teller. Thank the gods for THE SON OF SOBEK.
