[REVIEW] If I Stay by Gayle Forman

If I Stay

In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck...

A sophisticated, layered, and heart-achingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make, and the ultimate choice Mia commands.

Heartbreaking. There’s no other word for IF I STAY. It’s written so simply yet the rawness is there. The story is beautiful and sad. It’s not trying hard to be anything. Nothing felt forced in it. The words are smooth and simple, but they will pierce your heart. I loved everything about this book - the music, the love, the passion, even the pain. I love how cool the characters are. I love the awkward relationship between Mia and Adam. I love that Mia’s parents are so amazing. I love Kim because she’s true and honest. I love Willow because she’s a lot like Mia’s mom – tender but feisty. I love Mia’s Gramps because he understands. I love Adam because even though Mia is insecure and doesn’t feel like she deserves him, he’s crazy in love with her. And I love that this book made me cry a lot because it’s freaking beautiful and moving and tragic that I wouldn’t want to read it again anytime soon because it will definitely break my heart all over again.

[REVIEW] Before Ever After by Samantha Sotto

Before Ever After

Author: Samantha Sotto
Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Historical Fiction
Published: August 2nd 2011 by Crown

"A smartly written romance, mystery and historical adventure all wrapped up in a page-turner that will have you guessing until the very end." – Adena Halpern, author of The Ten Best Days of My Life

Three years after her husband Max's death, Shelley feels no more adjusted to being a widow than she did that first terrible day. That is, until the doorbell rings. Standing on her front step is a young man who looks so much like Max–same smile, same eyes, same age, same adorable bump in his nose–he could be Max's long-lost relation. He introduces himself as Paolo, an Italian editor of American coffee table books, and shows Shelley some childhood photos. Paolo tells her that the man in the photos, the bearded man who Paolo says is his grandfather though he never seems to age, is Max. Her Max. And he is alive and well.

As outrageous as Paolo's claims seem–how could her husband be alive? And if he is, why hasn't he looked her up? – Shelley desperately wants to know the truth. She and Paolo jet across the globe to track Max down–if it is really Max– and along the way, Shelley recounts the European package tour where they had met. As she relives Max's stories of bloody Parisian barricades, medieval Austrian kitchens, and buried Roman boathouses, Shelley begins to piece together the story of who her husband was and what these new revelations mean for her "happily ever after." And as she and Paolo get closer to the truth, Shelley discovers that not all stories end where they are supposed to.

I absolutely loved this book! It was heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. Before Ever After is a story of love and redemption that will leave you breathless.

Prophecy of the Most Beautiful

Author: Diantha Jones
Genre: YA Fantasy, Mythology
Series: Book 1, Oracle of Delphi series
Published: March 1st 2012 by Diantha Jones
She has a destiny so great that even the gods fear her.

Constant hallucinations and the frequent conversations with the voices in her head, have earned eighteen-year-old Chloe Clever the not-so-coveted title of "Whack Job" in her home town of Adel, Georgia. With the onslaught of prescription medications and therapists threatening to push her over the edge, she wishes for a life far away from the one she has, a life where she is destined to be more than the butt of everyone's jokes and mockery.

Be careful what you wish for has never rung more true.

After living through an attack from her worst nightmare, she awakens to find herself far from home, surrounded by glorious riches and servants…and a few demigods who enjoy killing things. Upon learning that her favorite rockstar is an Olympian god, she is thrust into her new life as the Oracle of Delphi, the prophesier of the future, and the great Pythia that the gods have been anxiously awaiting to arrive for centuries. Setting out to fulfill the prophecy she has been given and to keep her family safe from a demigod Princess that wants her dead, Chloe learns of how great she is to become, all the while fighting mythical monsters, evading divine assassins and trying to outwit the ever-cunning Greek gods who harbor secrets of their own. In the hopes of discovering the Most Beautiful and the truth of her destiny, she strives to uncover the mysteries of the demigod Prince who has sworn to protect her with his life…and threatens to win her heart in the process.

**I received a digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

I haven’t read a mythology-themed story about the Oracle of Delphi before now so this book is a first for me. The usual stuffs were re-tellings about gods and goddesses or adventures of demigods. I’m glad PROPHECY OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL offers something new. I’ve always thought the Oracle is an important and powerful character in the Geek myth but oftentimes she was downplayed as an ordinary seer, operating in the sidelines and reciting riddles and prophecies for the demigod’s quests. In this book, however, the Oracle is in the middle of the action.

[REVIEW] Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Walking Disaster

Author: Jamie McGuire
Series: sequel to Beautiful Disaster
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
Published: April 16th 2013 by Simon & Schuster UK

How much is too much to love?

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. Just when he thought he was invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Jamie McGuire's New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster Abby had her say. Now it's time to see the story through Travis's eyes.

“You know why I want you? I didn’t know I was lost until you found me. I didn’t know what alone was until the first night I spent without you in my bed. You’re the one thing I’ve got right. You’re what I’ve been waiting for, Pigeon.”

I read Beautiful Disaster two years ago and have almost forgotten how much I loved that book. WALKING DISASTER reminded me again why I adored Abby’s and Travis’s story.

Charlie’s the kind of boy that no one notices. Hell, even his own mother can’t remember his name. And girls? The invisible man gets more dates.

As if that weren’t enough, when a mysterious clockwork man tries to kill him in modern day Philadelphia, and they tumble through a hole into 1725 London, Charlie realizes even the laws of time don’t take him seriously.

Still, this isn’t all bad. In fact, there’s this girl, another time traveler, who not only remembers his name, but might even like him! Unfortunately, Yvaine carries more than her share of baggage: like a baby boy and at least two ex-boyfriends! One’s famous, the other’s murderous, and Charlie doesn’t know who is the bigger problem.

When one kills the other — and the other is nineteen year-old Ben Franklin — things get really crazy. Can their relationship survive? Can the future? Charlie and Yvaine are time travelers, they can fix this — theoretically — but the rules are complicated and the stakes are history as we know it.

And there's one more wrinkle: he can only travel into the past, and she can only travel into the future!

{REVIEW} When She Woke by Hillary Jordan

When She Woke

Author: Hillary Jordan
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopian
Published: October 4th 2011 by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill
Add to Goodreads

Bellwether Prize winner Hillary Jordan s provocative new novel, "When She Woke," tells the story of a stigmatized woman struggling to navigate an America of a not-too-distant future, where the line between church and state has been eradicated and convicted felons are no longer imprisoned and rehabilitated but chromed their skin color is genetically altered to match the class of their crimes and then released back into the population to survive as best they can. Hannah is a Red; her crime is murder. In seeking a path to safety in an alien and hostile world, Hannah unknowingly embarks on a path of self-discovery that forces her to question the values she once held true and the righteousness of a country that politicizes faith.

I wasn’t expecting to really like this book. At first, I thought it will be too serious, too dark or too deep for me. Yes, it was serious, dark and deep but WHEN SHE WOKE has a lot more to offer.

The dystopian society in which the story takes place is highly creative and unique. The world-building is concrete; it’s a very different era but not exaggerated to the point of being unrealistic. The story touches several sensitive issues like abortion, homosexuality, infidelity, racial and gender discrimination, and the likes but it doesn’t glorify them. This book merely shows the reality - however ugly it may be - in whatever time and society we live in.
